He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for others, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your coat you ought to provide them your pullover as well.
The apparent and straightforward truth that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a form of radical love concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
