An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
But the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
